Vertical lattice compression

On this plot, the vertical dark-blue bands adjacent to light blue correspond to angles at which there is low scattering yield. This results from blocking of scattered projectiles along low-index directions, and differences in these angles between different layers would indicate a compression or expansion of the crystal lattice in the direction perpendicular to the surface arising from strain induced by lattice mismatch. [Pg.303]
