Vectors used in gene therapy

A list of the various vectors capable of introducing genes into recipient cells has been provided in Table 14.2. These vectors are conveniently categorized as being viral-based or non-viral-based systems. The main vector systems developed, thus far, are discussed in somewhat more detail below.

The aim of this work is to provide a general overview of the field as well as the recent advances and techniques. To that end, the vectors used in gene therapy, the advantages and disadvantages of systemic vs. local delivery, and a variety of examples of clinical and preclinical studies using gene therapy for the treatment of disease will he discussed.
