Variations in Homologous Series Vinylogues and Benzologues

Molecular Variations in Homologous Series Vinylogues and Benzologues [Pg.275]

The concept of a homologous series was introduced into organic chemistry by Gerhardt. In medicinal chemistry the term has the same meaning, namely molecules differing from one another by only a methylene group. [Pg.275]

The most frequently encountered homologous series in medicinal chemistry are monoalkylated derivatives, cyclo-polymethylenic compounds, straight chain difunctional systems, polymethylenic compounds and substituted cationic heads. [Pg.275]

An example is provided by a series of neuraminidase inhibitors leading to the design of the avian flu agent tamiflu. These compounds result from a cyclohexene scaffold containing lipophilic side-chains.  [Pg.275]
