Valence-electron structure, vacancy-induced

Vacancy-induced variation of valence-electron structure 3.2.1 Covalent systems... [Pg.380]

Moreover, due to the existence of Ce s locaHzed 4f valence orbital, each reducing electron can exclusively stay in the empty 4f orbital of one Ce", turning it to a Ce. The exact Ce" or the site for the locahzed electron to occur is extremely sensitive to the structural relaxation induced by the vacancy or adsorption. The Ce cation site, where the neighboring surface atoms undergo the most dramatic structural relaxation, is usually the site for the electron to localize. This localized electron can transfer to adequate adsorbates, such as O2 and NO, to promote their activation and adsorption through enhanced electrostatic interaction with the surface. [Pg.52]
