Methods Used to Study Secondary Metabolism of Alkaloids 

Isotopic labeling of substrates is the single most ftnitfiil technique, and it is now used almost exclusively. Nevertheless, in the older literature there are some pertinent studies which, using suitable sampling procedure, followed the changes in alkaloids with time and detected the occurrence of catabolism or reversible metabolic translocation processes (see, for example, Weevers, 1932).
