Scientists and engineers at the University of Exeter are investigating whether natural fibers tike hemp and sisal could be used to make sustainable and eco-friendly brake pads [39]. The technology of brake pads turned green with the replacement of asbestos by aramids (hke Kevlar of DuPont) in the 1980s. Kevlar is very expensive and eco-friendly alternatives like hemp, jute, sisal, nettle, and flax are much, much cheaper. A breakthrough in this application will revolutionize brake manufacture and protect the environment.

The author was brought up in Hastings, on England s south coast, where he attended a local comprehensive school. Despite this education, he achieved entrance to the University of Exeter to read Chemistry. Having obtained a B.Sc. degree and then a doctorate (in 1989) on the electrochemistry of the viologens, he was awarded a fellowship at the University of Aberdeen to study the electrochromism of thin films of tungsten trioxide.

P. W. Fowler (University of Exeter, UJ .). The only closed shells in fullerenes are those that obey the 6k + 60 rule, and another series that obeys the 30 + 70 rule. If you want closed shells you will not get one, electronically, below C60. So the question of whether C60 is aromatic is another story. I think the chemistry is showing that C60 is anything but aromatic, and the serendipity was trying to think of an aromatic system, finding one, and then realizing that it wasn t.
