University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh is actually the youngest of the old Scottish universities, founded in 1583 as the College of Edinburgh. It then became the College of James VI, and finally the University of Edinburgh.66 [Pg.282]

It was at Edinburgh that the only serious opposition to the admission of women occurred, and the event came to be known as the Surgeons Hall Riot. 67 Five women, including Jex-Blake (see Chap. 4) and Edith Pechey (see below), were admitted to the Medical School in 1869. They were the first female medical undergraduates at any British university — though they had to fund their own segregated lectures. [Pg.283]

The most vociferous supporter of the women was Robert Wilson68 of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh. He sent a letter to Pechey following the riot  [Pg.283]

I wish to warn you that you are to be mobbed again on Monday. A regular conspiracy has been, I fear, set on foot for that purpose. I have made what I hope to be efficient arrangements for your protection. I had a meeting with Micky O Halloran who is leader of a formidable band, known in College as The Irish Brigade and he has consented to tell off a detachment of his set for duty on Monday. Micky was the formidable hero with the big red moustache who stood by us on Friday and whose presence with us rather disappointed the [Pg.283]

Though Jex-Blake and Pechey passed, the University authorities cited University regulations that only allowed medical degrees to be awarded to men. As a result, the British Medical Association refused to register the women as doctors. [Pg.284]
