The corrosion curves in Fig. 3.4 were obtained some years ago. Corrosion is markedly influenced by the pattern of pollution, which is changing in the United Kingdom, and consequently the long-term corrosion rates may change. There is some evidence based on more recent tests to indicate that in many industrial environments the corrosion rate of steel over periods of 15 years will drop to a greater extent than is shown in Fig. 3.4.

There are two basic kinds of epidemiological studies, descriptive and analytical. The goal of the first is to describe the occurrence of disease in populations. Analytical studies identify and explain the cause of the disease. For instance, descriptive epidemiology may identify a new disease such as AIDS. Interpretation of descriptive results leads to analytical studies that examine the disease in more detail. Since epidemiology is the study of disease in populations, the proportion of affected individuals in a population is of basic importance. To reduce deposition at both Scandinavian receptor sites below the 5 kg S /ha/yr illustrative critical loads, the orders of priority for the retrofitting of FGD to United Kingdom coal-fired power stations are similar and entail retrofitting FGD capcity in Scotland and north east England. This pattern of retrofit is distinctly different from that required to meet critical loads in south west Scotland and central Wales. 

The United Kingdom has, at present, the largest petroleum chemicals industry outside America. It is based wholly on imported liquid fractions and directed very largely to manufacture and use of olefins. The position in France is similar, but in Italy, with new natural gas discoveries and no coal, manufacture of chemicals from methane is of equal importance. Canada can hardly be termed the most recent entrant to this field, as she participated in the manufacture of synthetic rubber from petroleum during and since the second world war. The postwar developments so far have, however, been on the European pattern.
