Underage drinking alcohol industry

Because of pressure from the alcohol industry, neither the federal administration (represented by ONDCP) nor Congress is interested in having ONDCP focus on alcohol. In this chapter, there will be a discussion of how this poHcy is illogical, based on the harm caused by underage drinking and the relationship of youth alcohol and dhcit drug use.

The alcohol industry has had some success in the past in pressuring federal agencies to minimize underage drinking prevention. In 1995, the National Beer Wholesalers Association successfully lobbied a House subcommittee to ehminate the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention s discretionary budget for grants and initiatives.
