The free-radical cure mechanism of the vinyl ester resins is well understood. In most respects, it is similar to that of the unsaturated polyester resins. To initiate the curing process, it is necessary to generate free radicals within Ike resm mass. Organic peroxides are tlie most common source of free radicals. These peroxides will decompose under the influence of elevated temperatures or chemical promoters, e.g., organometallics or tertiary amines, to form free radicals. Generation of free radicals also can be effected by ultraviolet or high-energy radiation applied directly to the resin system. The free radicals thus formed react to open the double bond... [Pg.1688]

This product is an ultraviolet light absorber for use in polystyrene, unsaturated polyesters, coatings, varnishes, lacquers, and coatings based on epoxy or phenolic alkyds. It is also used in pressure sensitive adhesives, polymethylacrylate (fdm or sheeting), thermoplastic rubbers, polyisoprene latex and alcohol based cosmetics. [Pg.50]

A special form of the SMC is used for bandages. A mixture of unsaturated polyesters, styrene, and benzoin derivatives is applied to nylon netting. The mixture cures under ultraviolet light. An advantage of these bandages over plaster of Paris is the lower weight, the water resistance, and the transparency to X-rays. [Pg.460]

Materials that undergo a chemical reaction by the action of heat and pressure, catalysts, ultraviolet light, etc., leading to a relatively infusible state. Typical of the plastics in the thermosetting family are the amines (melamine and urea), unsaturated polyesters, alkyds, epoxies, and phenolics. A common thermoset goes through three stages. [Pg.2272]

Vinyl ester resins (epoxy diacrylates) are used by the glass-fibre-reinforcement industry for products that are resistant to chemicals and corrosion. They are epoxy di(meth)acrylates (P-hydroxyester acrylates) that are usually obtained by reacting epoxy resins of glycidyl derivatives with (meth)acrylic acid. They can also be manufactured from bisphenol A and glycidyl (meth) acrylates (Kanerva et al. 1986 Kanerva et al. 1989 Jolanki 1991). Acrylates based on bisphenol A or epoxy resin can be polymerised by electron beams, ultraviolet light, and also by the addition of various peroxides (Jolanki et al. 1995). The same cross-linker (styrene), hardeners (organic peroxides) and accelerators (cobalt) as for unsaturated polyester resin are used in composite epoxy acrylates (Rolston 1980). [Pg.612]

Wollastonite is good for use where resistance to water or humid environments and to ultraviolet light is required. It is used in unsaturated polyesters, polyamides, polypropylene and vinyl plastisols. It has the disadvantage that it is vulnerable to acids. [Pg.248]
