Various techniques are available for the experimental determination of process model. Astron [77] and Eykhoff [78] have given a survey of different identification techniques. The most common technique is to appiy a step or impulse perturbation and to evaluate the transfer function from the resulting transient response. A more sophisticated technique is the stochastic identification technique. In this technique. 

Analytical techniques generally involve two areas. The first is the direct solution of the system differential equations in the Aime domain, usually by state variables. The second area is optimization of a specific performance criterion. The criteria for optimization by analytical techniques usually involve minimum response time or an integral time-cost function.
