Tumors lung cancer

Long-term complications of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and chemora-diotherapy include gonadal dysfunction, secondary malignancies, and cardiac disease. Patients treated for HL are at increased risk of developing leukemia, GI tumors, lung cancer, and breast cancer.

PET could improve the delineation of GTV in some tumor entities like brain tumors, lung cancer, and head and neck cancer. Therefore, its impact on the clinical outcome has to be evaluated in prospective trials. The role of PET for the visualization of tumor biology is unclear. However, this approach could open new perspectives in treatment planning and monitoring of solid tumors and has to be assessed in the future in experimental and clinical studies. 

In vivo studies were carried on the aziridinated cyclopent[Z ]indole quinone out before it was discovered that the aziridinyl ring did not participate in DNA alkylation. The results in Fig. 7.22 for the B16 melanoma syngraft model reveal that there was substantial reduction of tumor mass at 3 mg/kg. However, toxicity (animal deaths) became apparent at 5 mg/kg. On the other hand, human lung cancer xenografts in SCID (severe combined immunodeficient) mice were reduced to 50% mass with 3x1 mg/kg doses without any animal deaths. 

Surgical resection of the tumor is the mainstay of treatment in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer and produces the longest survival rates. 

Currently, one of the most promising agents for the prevention of lung cancer is selenium, which appeared to prevent the development of lung tumors in patients with skin cancer.15 This has not yet been shown in patients without preexisting skin cancer, although studies are underway.

The first step in treatment of NSCLC involves confirmation of the clinical stage and determination of resectability of the tumor. This decision always should be made by a thoracic surgeon who routinely performs lung cancer surgery. Treatment options depend on the advancement of disease (i.e., local, locally advanced, or metastatic). 

Paraneoplastic syndromes are clinical syndromes owing to nonmetastatic systemic effects of cancer. Tumors make and secrete biologically active products that can stimulate or inhibit hormone production, autoimmunity, immune complex production, or immune suppression. Radiation therapy is the treatment of choice for chemotherapy-resistant tumors such as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or in chemotherapy-refractory patients with SVCS. Between 70% and 90% of patients will experience relief of symptoms. Radiation therapy also may be combined with chemotherapy for chemotherapy-sensitive tumors such as SCLC and lymphoma. In the rare emergency situations of airway obstruction or elevated intracranial pressure, empirical radiotherapy prior to tissue diagnosis should be used. In most patients, symptoms resolve within 1 to 3 weeks.
