Mercury bis[benzenetellurolate] and sodium benzenetellurolale in liquid ammonia formed a tris[benzenetcllurolato]mercurate(II) anion that was isolated as the tetraphenylphos-phonium salt. This salt and tetraphenylphosphonium benzenetellurolate combined in chloroform solution to give the tetraphenylphosphonium salt of undecakis[benzenetellur-olato ] trimercurate1. 

Tetraphenylphosphonium Tris[benzcnetellurolato]mercurate(II)7 0.68 g (3.0 mmol) of sodium benzenetellurolate and 2.16 g (3,3 mmol) of mercury bis[benzenetellurolatc] are dissolved in 30 ml of liquid ammonia, and this solution is poured into 70 ml of liquid ammonia containing 2.25 g (6 mmol) of tetraphenylphosphonium chloride. The resultant mixture is filtered, the solid is washed five times with boiling liquid ammonia, and then dissolved in a small amount of tetrahydrofuran. Ethanol is added to this solution to precipitate the amber-colored solid which is stable in dry air but decomposes in sunlight yield 2.8 g (80%) m.p. 130° (dec.). 

Organobismuth ate complexes have similar distorted trigonal bipyramidal structures with an empty space in the equatorial plane. Typical examples include tetraethylammonium l,l -spirobis[(3,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-3//-2,l-benzoxabismole] [92TL6653, 95HAC293] (Table 6.5, 30), [isopropyldithio-carbonato-5]diphenylbismuthine [80ZAAC(470)171] (Table 6.5, 32), bis(tri-phenylphosphine)iminium dichloro(2,2 -biphenylene)bismuthate [960M887] (Table 6.5, 39), and tetraphenylphosphonium dibromodiphenylbismuthate [92JCS(D)1967] (Table 6.5, 46). 

All operations are carried out under a nitrogen atmosphere using thoroughly degassed solvents. The tetraethylammonium salt of tris(Oethyl dithiocarbonato)-ferrate(II),3 [tris(xanthato)ferrate(II), Fe(etxant)3 ], 3.8 g (6.9 mmole) potassium benzenethiolate, KSC6H5, 4.6 g (31 mmole), and tetraphenylphosphonium chloride, [(C6HS)4P]C1, 5.18 g (13.8 mmole) are added to 25 mL acetonitrile, CH3CN, in a 125-mL Erlenmeyer flask. The suspension is boiled for 15 minutes and the contents of the flask are filtered while hot.

Zagala et al. investigated the polymerization of methacrylates in the presence of tetraphenylphosphonium (TPP) ion at ambient temperature. The polymerization appears to have living character [228]. In case of MMA number average molecular masses increase linearly with conversion and molecular mass distributions are narrow (< 1.30). Such compounds find extensive use as metal ion extractants. Solutions of compounds such as Tri-butylphosphate (TBT) in cyclohexane or CCI4 enable salts such as U02(N03)2 and Th(N03)4 to be extracted because the TBT solvates the metal ion via its strongly basic oxygen, forming, e.g. U02(N03)2.2TBT. Phosphonium ions such as Tetraphenylphosphonium (1+) [PPh ] are used as ion-pairing cations for the extraction of anions such as CIO , ReO and SbCl . Quaternary ammonium salts and arsonium salts behave similarly. Some phosphoric acids have been proposed as metal ion precipitants.
