Triphenyl benzene methane

Applied to the synthesis of hydrocarbons the following results have been obtained by this new method. 9 10-Diphenyl-9 10-dihydroanthracene is formed by the condensation of benzene and chloroform, whilst in the ordinary Friedel-Crafts reaction (A., 194, 254 227, 107) triphenyl-methane (Preparation 6) is the main product, traces of chlorarylmethanes and tetraphenylethane (B., 26, 1952) being also formed. The same compound is also obtained from benzal chloride and benzene. Carbon tetrachloride and benzene give 9 9 10 10-tetraphenyl-9 10-dihydroanthracene as do also phenylchloroform and benzene. In the older reaction triphenylchloromethane (p. 432) is the chief product. 

When cold, the mixture is added to an equal volumo of cold water, and tho upper benzene layer which contains the triphenyl-methane, is separated and dried over calcium chloride. Benzene is then distilled off and the temperature finally raised to 200°, after which any diphenyl-methane is removed by distilling under 80 mm. pressure. B.p. 175°. When the thermometer rises above 180°, tho distillation is stopped and the residue, when cool, extracted with warm benzene.

Another interesting reaction of a TAM derivative was first reported by Griffin et al. [181] and later confirmed by Shi et al. [162]. They found that, upon the photolysis in degassed benzene, 1,1,1 -triphenyl-2-propene undergoes cyclization and simultaneous phenyl migration to generate 1,1,2-triphenylcyclopropane in competition with the di-rr-methane rearrangement.
