D2EHPA mixtures have been installed by various companies in the United States, at Shiprock in New Mexico, Grand Junction, Rifle and Gunnison in Colorado and Riverton in Wyoming. DDPA in kerosene is used in the Vitro Uranium Company s plants at Salt Lake City and Canonsbury. In the former, at least, a trimethyl nonanol additive is employed. Backwashing is with hydrochloric acid, which is afterwards recovered by evaporation in Karbate or Teflon lined plant.

To a flask containing 1042 gm (5.60 mole) of 2,6,8-trimethyl-4-nonanol is added 10.4 gm of powdered KOH and the contents are heated to 120°C. A stream of gaseous ethylene oxide is passed into the reaction mixture by means of a gas-dispersing tube until 735 gm (16.8 mole) of ethylene oxide has combined. The reaction is exothermic and the temperature (150°C) is maintained by cooling the flask with cold water. The product obtained corresponds to the triethylene glycol of 2,6,8-trimethyl-4-nonanol. 

In a similar manner 2,6,8-trimethyl-4-nonanol is reacted with ethylene oxide to give the pentaethylene glycol ether [47]... 

To a 1-liter, four-necked flask equipped with an agitator, thermometer, addition funnel, and condenser are added 186 gm (1.0 mole) of 2,6,8-trimethyl-4-nonanol, and 0.55 gm (0.03 mole) of boron trifluoride. The reaction mixture is purged with nitrogen and then 116gm (2.0 moles) propylene oxide is added over a 1-hr period at 75°-80°C with constant agitation. The acid catalyst is neutralized with methanolic caustic to pH 8.5. Then 0.3 gm sodium hydroxide is added and the temperature raised to 150 -160°C ethylene oxide is added (369 gm = 8.4 mole) at 0-15 lb pressure to a cloud point (1% in water) at 36°C. The final product has surfactant properties.
