Hospital admissions due to benzodiazepine abuse have been studied as well. According to the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, tranquilizers such as the benzodiazepines were the primary substance of 0.3% of TEDS admissions in 1998. In addition, 39% of patients admitted for tranquilizer use reported abuse of alcohol as well as tranquilizers. Admissions for tranquilizer abuse were mostly female (48%) and white (90%). [Pg.72]

Heroin abusers comprise the vast majority of those in treatment for opiate abuse. According to the SAMH-SA s Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), only 1% of admissions for addiction treatment recorded in 1999 were related to opiates other than heroin. However, the number of these admissions that was for opium itself cannot be determined from the available data because opium is categorized with all other drugs with morphinelike effects. Treatment facilities have taken note that inhalant abusers most often do not solely abuse inhalants. In the 1999 Treatment Episode Data Set study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 1,321 individuals were admitted for treatment of inhalant abuse. These cases, where inhalants were the primary abused drug, accounted for only 0.1% of admittances in the treatment facilities.
