Transition metal intermetallic interface

When studying the growth kinetics of the intermetallic layers, after the run the crucible, together with the flux, the melt and the solid specimen, was shot into cold water to arrest the reactions at the transition metal-aluminium interface. Note that the solid specimen continued to rotate until solidification of the melt, ft is especially essential in examining the formation of the intermetallic layers under conditions of their simultaneous dissolution in the liquid phase (with undersaturated aluminium melts). The time of cooling the experimental cell from the experimental temperature down to room temperature did not exceed 2 s. 

This paper discusses transition metal intermetallic compounds, in the context of the reactivity and physical properties expected for materials produced via solid-solid reactions at the metal catalyst oxide-support interface. It is shown that several observable and proposed features of the so called Strong Metal-Support Interaction (SMSI) — chemisorption activity, phase segregation, and encapsulation — follow naturally from the chemistry of these materials. Both literature precedent and experimental data are presented to support the close relationship suggested above.

This introduction will be followed by a tutorial description of the relevant aspects of "H on metals", a list of experimental techniques and of theoretical models often used in this context. Thereupon, selected results on H on clean and precovered metals will be presented for transition metals, non-transition metals, alloys and intermetallics, glassy metals, overlayers and other specially prepared surfaces and interfaces.
