Tracheal suction catheter

Tracheal suction catheters may inoculate bacteria directly into the respiratory tract and aseptic technique, including wearing gloves, is recommended during suctioning. A closed multiuse suction system may be more convenient than a single-use catheter and it may cause less hypoxia for the patient, but it has not been shown to decrease the risk of VAP (2,160).
