In alpha zirconium or titanium phosphate, the aluminum Keggin ion can be intercalated after a previous treatment with butylamine (5) interlayer distances ranging from 13.6 to 16.1 A for the ne materials has been reported. -TiP can also be pillared with the aluminum Keggin ion and the surface area of the material ( 170 mV ) is retained by up to 70% after heating at 4(X) C.

In our laboratory, we have started experiments in order to pillar the layered Zr,Ti or Sn phosphates with zirconium oxide or titanium polioxocations. Up to now, the increase of the interlayer distance is not very high (10-13 A). The thermal stability of our compounds is of the same order as the previously mentioned materials at 600 amorphous products are formed and at 8(X) C, phases similar to the dizirconium triphosphate are evident from XRD. 

I would be remiss if I did not discuss in a small way ongoing work in my laboratory on organically pillared titanium and zirconium phosphates. The parent phosphates, having composition M(HP04)2 H20 and possessing the a-phase structure, resemble smectites in that the metal atoms are sandwiched between phosphate groups [70]. The major difference results from the phosphate tetrahedra being inverted, as shown in Fig. 17.
