Timing of consequences

There is another factor that affects the effectiveness of both rewards and punishments. This concerns the delay between the behaviour and the consequences that follow from it. There is a very simple general principle that is, that more immediate consequences will have more influence over behaviour than consequences that are delayed. As we will see, this has important implications for those trying to improve safety.
