As Figure 4 shows, an inorganic char layer forms on the surface of the ablation test specimen in less than 8 seconds in the combustions chamber. The virgin material lying less than 200 um below the char surface remains unaffected by the harsh thermo-oxidizing environment of the combustion gases.
