Research and development on thermal spray processing and chemistry-based techniques for deposing multilayered nanostructured coatings, processing of nanoscale powders into bulk structures and coatings has been undertaken. 

Thermal spraying is very flexible and allows buildup of thick coatings from many materials, as shown in Figure 14.3. Dining such deposition, a very limited crystal growth can be achieved that allows for a buildup of coatings with a refined structure, down to a size of 30 nm in the case of nanostructured WC-Co-based coatings (Basak et al., 2012).
