Another step in laboratory automation to be achieved is the conversion of standard chemical procedures such as titrations or thermal gravimetric analysis, into unit laboratory operations. A procedure could then be selected from these laboratory operations by an expert system and translated by the system to produce a set of iastmctions for a robot. The robot should be able to obey specific iastmctions, such as taking a specified sample aliquot and titrating it using a specified reagent. [Pg.394]

An integrated GC/IR/MS instrument is a powerful tool for rapid identification of thermally generated aroma compounds. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (GC/IR) provides a complementary technique to mass spectrometry (MS) for the characterization of volatile flavor components in complex mixtures. Recent improvements in GC/IR instruments have made it possible to construct an integrated GC/IR/HS system in which the sensitivity of the two spectroscopic detectors is roughly equal. The combined system offers direct correlation of IR and MS chromatograms, functional group analysis, substantial time savings, and the potential for an expert systems approach to identification of flavor components. Performance of the technique is illustrated with applications to the analysis of volatile flavor components in charbroiled chicken. [Pg.61]

Xpert Rule is widely used in industrial and scientific applications, one of them performed in cooperation with NASA and Rockwell Aerospace. It is called NASA s Contamination Control Engineering Design Guidelines Expert System and was developed by Rockwell International s Space Systems Division. It was developed for education in contamination control processes and is designed as an interactive guide to assist with quantifying contamination for sensitive surfaces. The tool enables the user to quantify molecular and particulate contamination requirements for solar arrays, thermal control surfaces, or optical sensors [24],... [Pg.56]

TEXSYS is an expert system developed by NASA to monitor conditions and determine malfnnctions in thermal bus components of propnlsion jet engines. [Pg.273]

Acceptance criteria for expert systems depends largely on the function of the system to be developed. This relates to the need for clearly defining requirements. For example, the Thermal... [Pg.51]

The various separation sequences can exhibit considerable differences in investment costs and energy consumption. Expert systems have been developed to simplify the time-consuming design of the individual variants and of the most favorable separation sequence [Erdmann 1996a, Trum 1986]. They consider criteria such as feed composition, relative volatilities, the absolute positions of the boiling points, thermal stability of the individual components, purity rquirements, and corrosive properties. [Pg.119]

Direct detection by IMS of TMA in chicken meat juice with excellent detection limits of 0.6 0.2 ng using partial least squares (PLS) and fuzzy rule-building expert system (FuRES) was also reported. A combination of thermal desorption with GC... [Pg.372]

The important bioanalytical technique of microcalorimetry has been added to Chapter 16, Thermal Analysis, and TMA and DMA have been greatly expanded, thanks to the excellent materials and invaluable assistance from TA Instruments. Optical thermal instrumentation is now covered with the assistance of Expert System Solutions, Italy. [Pg.1243]

As what the Board calls an informal chain of command began to shape STS-107 s outcome, location in the structure empowered some to speak and silenced others. For example, a Thermal Protection System tile expert, who was a member of the Debris Assessment Team but had an office in the more prestigious Shuttle Program, used his personal network to shape the Mission Management Team view and snuff out dissent. [Pg.164]

Some features of the expert system will be better understood by means of the example shown in Table IV. The reaction is the thermal reaction at high temperature,... [Pg.422]

Flash desorption of oligomers relies on kinetic competition between evaporation and thermal decomposition. Molecular ion signals from the MS have been used to determine the average molecular masses and distribution of oligomers, whereas expert systems can be used to establish mechanisms for the thermal degradation of polymers, e.g. to determine the relationships between polymer structure and the corresponding Py-MS spectra. [Pg.755]
