Theoretical resolving power

The practical resolving power is the ratio of the wavelength (or wavenumber) and the resolution, which may be chosen by changing the dimensions of slits or apertures, R = A/AA = D/Au. Its upper limit is Rq, the theoretical resolving power, determined by the properties of the dispersive elements or by the path length of interfering rays. SqX or SoD is referred to as theoretical resolution. [Pg.68]

Eqs. 3.1-19 and 3.1-25, which describe the relation between the characteristics of gratings and prisms and the theoretical resolving power Ro, give the optical conductance of grating and prism spectrometers. We may write... [Pg.73]

The angular dispersion and the theoretical resolving power R0 are related as d2/dX = Rq/ D. where D is the width of the monochromatic beam where it exits the dispersive element. The reciprocal linear dispersion is given as ... [Pg.57]

The above formula also assumes use of an infinitely narrow entrance slit, as does the formula for theoretical resolving power of a prism. The relation between theoretical and attainable resolution can be illustrated from Michelson s measurement of the wavelength of the green mercury line at 5641 A. Operating in the sixth order on a 10-in. ruled surface Michelson... [Pg.64]

While the diffusion-limited resolving power estimates the possible separation power of an ion mobility spectrometer, the theoretical resolving power determines its separation power by taking the additional consideration of the actual operation parameters, such as the ion shutter pulse width and pressure as... [Pg.2253]

The efficiency of an ion mobility spectrometer can be computed by expressing the experimental resolving power as a percentage of the theoretical resolving power as... [Pg.2253]
