The Nomenclature of Cycloalkanes Skeletal Structures

Add the appropriate number of hydrogens so each carbon is bonded to four atoms. [Pg.101]

Draw the structure and give the systematic name of a compound with molecular formula C5H12 that has [Pg.101]

Cycloalkanes are almost always written as skeletal structures. Skeletal sttuctures show the carbon-carbon bonds as lines, but do not show the carbons or the hydrogens bonded to carbons. Each vertex in a skeletal stmcture represents a carbon, and each carbon is understood to be bonded to the appropriate number of hydrogens to give the carbon four bonds. [Pg.102]

Acychc molecules can also be represented by skeletal structures. In skeletal stmctures of acyclic molecules, the carbon chains are represented by zigzag lines. Again, each vertex represents a carbon, and carbons are assumed to be present where a line begins or ends. [Pg.102]

If there Is only one substituent on a ring, do not give that substituent a number. [Pg.102]
