Two key problems of injection molding processing are (i) shaping such parts that meet the desired dimensional tolerances and surface finish, and (ii) making 

relations between deformation, local temperature and applied stress within the material  

influence of the thermo-mechanical history experienced by the material on its internal structure  

Impact of the processing-induced internal structure on the flow behavior of the final properties of the material. 

Research of these relations and effects is the province of rheology.
