The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (lOSH) is the leading professional body in the United Kingdom concerned with matters of workplace safety and health. Its growth in recent years reflects the increasing importance attached by employers to safety and health for all at work and for those affected by work activities. The Institution provides a focal point for practitioners in the setting of professional standards, their career development and for the exchange of technical experiences, opinions and views. 

Increasingly employers are demanding a high level of professional competence in their safety and health advisers, calling for them to hold recognised qualifications and have a wide range of technical expertise. These are evidenced by Chartered Membership of the Institution for which proof of a satisfactory level of academic knowledge of the subject reinforced by a number of years of practical experience and skills development in the field, assessed by an Initial Professional Development (IPD). 

The Chartered Members of lOSH are supported by Technician Members who hold a lower level qualification but are able to demonstrate considerable experience in health and safety roles. 

All lOSH members are required to imdertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure that initial competence is both maintained and developed.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (lOSH) is the safety adviser s professional body and sponsors the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) which examines in the vocational qualification in occupational safety and health. It provides professional services to its members and represents their interests in discussions with government and other bodies. 

One of the requirements for corporate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health is to have demonstrate an appropriate level of academic knowledge of safety and related subjects.

Since the last edition, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has changed its corporate membership structure to a single level, thus eliminating the separate levels of examination and the need for guidance on the particular sections of the book that need to be studied. To match the new membership structure, the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health has revised its syllabus and this has been covert in the updated text. 

On Monday, June 13, 2012, at the ASSE Professional Development Conference, it was announced that a new Center for Safety and Health Sustainability was an active entity. This center is the result of collaborative efforts among ASSE, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (lOSH-UK). The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (lOSH) and the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) produce monthly journals, as does the British Safety Council, all of which provide a valuable insight into specific safety areas. 

As Managing Director of Salvus Consulting Limited he has an active involvement leading his team delivering the new NEBOSH Fire Certificate programme. Andrew is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and a Graduate Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE). 

Martin Muckett has Masters Degrees in Business Administration and Local Government Management. He is been an active Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers since 1986, and was awarded the NEBOSH Dipioma in 1998. He is a chartered member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
