The vapour ascending from the boiler should in general reach the condenser without the introduction or removal of heat, other than by exchange with the reflux. When the usual insulating materials are used this requirement can be satisfied sufficiently closely up to a temperature of about 100°C only above this temperature, heat must be supplied to make good what is lost by convection and radiation to the surrounding air.
