Complete combustion in a conventional open circuit plant 

In the conventional gas turbine plant, a hydrocarbon fuel (e.g. methane CH4) is burnt, usually with excess air, i.e. more air than is required for stoichiometric combustion. 

all the carbon and hydrogen is used resulting in maximum formation of CO2 and H2O (complete combustion). 

Nitrogen is carried through the combustion unchanged and forms a large part of the carrying gas for any unused oxygen. Supplementary combustion (or reheat) can then take place if more fuel is supplied to the products of primary combustion.
