The atomic sizes and bonding radii of main group elements

On going from Ba to Hg the nuclear charge increases by +24 while 24 electrons are filled into the 5d- and 4/-orbitals. The screening by the additional electrons does not compensate for the additional nuclear charge as a result the MIE increases even more than between Ca and Zn or between Sr and Cd. [Pg.51]

10 The atomic sizes and bonding radii of main group elements [Pg.51]

While the bond distances decrease smoothly across the second period from Li to F and across the third from Na to Cl, there is an abrupt decrease of the A-H bond distance between Ca and Zn in the third period and between Sr and Cd in the fifth. This phenomenon is referred to as the rf-block contraction. Like the corresponding increase of the ionization energy between the same elements, it is due to an increased effective nuclear charge. [Pg.51]

We shall return to a discussion of the abrupt decrease of the A-H bond distance between the sixth-period elements Ba and Hg in Chapter 10. [Pg.51]
