The Alternate Character Set

In Excel for Windows, the characters are obtained by holding down the ALT key and typing the four-digit ASCII code for the character, using the numeric keypad. The range of useful characters obtainable in this way is rather limited. Table 1-3 gives some characters for Macintosh for characters obtained using Arial, one standard font for Excel 2000 for Windows, use the ASCII codes shown in parentheses in Table 1-3. 

If you use a different font, you ll have to experiment to see what alternate characters are produced.
