Thallium -sulfide

Thallium sulfide (Tl S) is used to make inftared-sensitive photoelectric cells and as a pesticide. [Pg.188]

Thalhum and its compounds have limited apphcations. It is used in insecticides and rodenticides. Thalhum-mercury alloys are used for switches and closures for use at sub-zero temperatures. Another application is in making low melting glasses for electronic encapsulation. Thallium sulfide is used in photocells. [Pg.922]

Uses. Thallium compounds have limited use in industrial applications. The use of thallous sulfate in rodenticides and insecticides has been replaced by other compounds less harm fill to animals (see Insect control technology Pesticides). Thallium sulfide has been used in photoelectric cells (see Photovoltaic cells). A thallium bromide—thallium iodide mixture is used to transmit infrared radiation for signal systems. Thallous oxide is used in the manufacture of glass (qv) that has a high coefficient of refraction. Thallium formate—malonate aqueous solutions (Cletici s solution) have been used in mineral separations. Many thallium compounds have been used as reagents in oiganic synthesis in research laboratories. [Pg.470]

Small Quantities. Wear nitrile rubber gloves, laboratory coat, a face shield, and goggles. Work in the fume hood. Dissolve the thallium salt in water. Add a 10% aqueous solution of sodium sulfide until no further precipitation occurs. Filter the precipitated thallium sulfide, dry, package, and send for disposal in a secure landfill site. Destroy excess sulfide in the filtrate by the addition of laundry bleach, neutralize the solution with 6 M hydrochloric acid (prepared by cautiously adding a volume of concentrated acid to an equal volume of cold water), and wash into the drain.4... [Pg.602]

Thallium is too expensive to have many practical applications. There are a few exceptions, however, that make use of special properties of the elements and its compounds. For example, thallium sulfide (TI2S) is sometimes used in photocells. Photocells are devices that convert light into electrical energy. In some kinds of light, thallium sulfide does not conduct electricity very well. But in other kinds of light, it conducts very well. Special photocells can be built to take advantage of this property. [Pg.597]

Physicists also use the concept of a bipolaron, which is simply a pair of electrons with different spins, dressed by the accompanying polarization field. In chemistry, the bipolaron corresponds to a site where the metal ion has an oxidation state lower by two units. In a lattice of thallium sulfide (TljSj), an occasional TP ion with its different bond lengths, would be a bipolaron. [Pg.409]

The electrical conductivity of thallium sulfide changes with exposure to IR light, and this compound is used in photocells. Research activities are going on to utilize thallium oxide and thallium cuprate for high-temperature superconductors. [Pg.867]

Interconversion of Carboxylic Acid Derivatives. Diethyl phosphorochloridate is useful for activation of carboxylic acids toward nucleophilic attack. Subsequent treatment of the phosphate ester with thallium sulfides produced thiol esters." Variations"" on this theme included prior formation of a heterocyclic phospho-nate followed by treatment with alcohols, amines, or thiols, thus providing a racemization-free method to prepare esters, amides, and thiol esters, respectively (eq 9),""" ... [Pg.145]
