Tellurium tetrabromide dioxide

The compound decomposed on storage with deposition of tellurium1. Tellurium tetrachloride need not be used in substance it can be generated in the reaction mixture from tellurium dioxide and acetyl chloride or chlorotrimethylsilanc. With acetyl bromid tellurium tetrabromide can be formed. When cyclohexene was present in the reaction mixture, 2-halocyclohexyl tellurium trihalides were isolated in approximately 70% yields. Acetic acid, chloroform, or dichloromethane may be used as solvents2. 

Bis[bromomethyl -tetrahydro-1,4-tellurazine 1,1-Dibromide3 3.2 g (20 mmol) of tellurium dioxide are added to 24 ml of concentrated hydrobromic acid and the mixture is shaken to dissolve the tellurium dioxide. The resultant tellurium tetrabromide solution is added dropwise to a solution of 1.94 g (20 mmol) of diallylamine dissolved in 200 ml of diethyl ether. The mixture is stirred for 6 h, allowed to stand for 12 h, then the organic layer is separated, and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The mixture is filtered, the filtrate is distilled under vacuum to remove the solvent, and the residue is recrystallized from benzene yield 3.8 g (35%) m.p. 175° (dec.).
