Plasma processes have been successfully demonstrated for production of metals from their oxides and chlorides intermediates. Reducing agents are, of course, to be used. Thus, a plasma-based process involving reduction of tantalum chloride in hydrogenous atmosphere has been claimed to yield highly pure metal powder suitable for making of porous capacitor of high capacitance.

Preparation of Niobium (Tantalum) Chloride and Purification from Iron Impurities. Assemble an apparatus as shown in Fig. 124. Place activated carbon preliminarily dried in vacuum during two hours at 200-250 Cinto section III of the reactor. Mix 2 g of niobium (tantalum) and 0.5 g of iron in a porcelain boat and place them in section I. Fill columns 5 and 6 with a mixture of glass wool and phosphoric anhydride, and fill wash bottle 7 with sulphuric acid. 

Both neutral and ionic niobium and tantalum chloride azides are known. The neutral azides [MN3C14]2 were obtained from MC1S and C1N3.312 They both explode spontaneously, although the tantalum derivative is somewhat stabler. The more stable ionic [MN3X5]- (X = C1, Br) species were synthesized from the hexahalometallates(V) and iodoazide or from the pen-tahalides and phosphonium or arsonium azides.73,258... 

It should be noted that the formula HTagCl .4H20 has been recently ascribed to the corresponding tantalum chloride, as well as similar formulae to analogous compounds of molybdenum and tungsten. The formula) here given for niobium dichloride and its derivatives are, therefore, perhaps incorrect.

It is interesting to note that none of the gas chemical investigations succeeded to investigate the behavior of tantalum chloride. Obviously, the tendency to react with oxygen is even higher for Ta compared to Nb and Db. 

We adopt the results of Spiridonov and Romanov A XX/, Xg - X - 278.7563 x 10 g cm. A normal coordinate treatment of NbBrg(g) in the Urey-Bradley force fields was performed by So (7) using the reported vibrational frequencies of Beattie and Ozin (6). This work by So (7) was Intended to check the correctness of the reported fundamental frequencies and predict those unobserved frequencies (Vg, v, Vg). Beattie and Ozin (6) had recorded the gas phase Raman spectra of niobium and tantalum chloride and bromide. We adopt the results of So (7 ) which support the work of Beattie and Ozin (6).
