Tangential speech

Tangential speech—Speech pattern whereby the connections between expressed ideas are unrelated or have little relationship to each other. [Pg.2692]

Tangentiality Abandoning one s ideational objective in pursuit of thoughts peripheral to the original goal. Used to describe a thought and speech pattern wherein the individual never gets to the point or answers the question. [Pg.1577]

Thought disorder manifest by failure in the organisation of speech such that it drifts away from the point (tangentiality), never reaches the pome (circumstantiality), moves from one topic to the next illogically (loosened associations, knight s move chinking), breaks off abruptly only to continue on an unrelated topic (derailment) or moves from one topic to the next on the basis of a pun or words which sound similar (clang association). [Pg.383]
