The present volume encompasses a wide range of heterocyclic chemistry. Syntheses of heterocyeles from thioureas are reviewed by T. S. Griffin, T. S. Woods, and I). L. Klayman, while S. W. Schneller describes the chemistry of benzothiins and their derivatives (thiochromans, thiochromones, and thio-chromanones). Developments in chrom-3-ene chemistry are reviewed by L. Merlini. F. D. Popp contributes a chapter on the isatins. A discussion of theoretical asjx cts of the tautomerism of pyrimidines, by J. S. Kwiatkowski and B. Pullman, follows up a corresponding earlier contribution (Vol. 13) on tautomeric purines. In the final chapter P. and D. Cagniant describe the natural occurrence and synthesis of the bonzofurans. 

The reaction of 2-aminobenzonitriles 12 (X = CH = CH Y = CH) with carbon disulfide in pyridine solution constitutes a convenient, one-step synthesis of quinazoline-2,4(l//,37/)-dithiones 14. The reaction is also generally applicable to heterocyelic 2-aminonitriles 12 (X = NH Y = N) which afford fused pyrimidinedithiones 14. The reaction proceeds via the intermediate formation of 13 which rearranges rapidly and irreversibly by a base-catalyzed ring-opening-ring-closure sequence to give the observed product. ... 

The general procedure for such transformations closely follows that previously described, except the reaction is quenched at — 78 °C by rapid addition of triethylamine (7 equivalents) prior to transfer to the diethyl cthcr/water mixture. For the synthesis of nitrogen heterocyeles, the reaction is carried out at 0 25 °C rather than at —78 "C.
