Synthesis hemihydrate

In this experiment students synthesize basic copper(ll) carbonate and determine the %w/w Gu by reducing the copper to Gu. A statistical analysis of the results shows that the synthesis does not produce GUGO3, the compound that many predict to be the product (although it does not exist). Results are shown to be consistent with a hemihydrate of malachite, Gu2(0H)2(G03) I/2H2O, or azurite, GU3(0H)2(G03)2. 

Fluorination of tetrachlorophthalic acid hemihydrate with an excess of sulfur tetrafluoride, or of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride with a sulfur tetrafluonde-hydro-gen fluoride reagent, provides an efficient synthesis of 4,5,6,7- tetrachloro-1,1,3,3-tetrafluorol,3-dihydroisobenzofuran. 3,4,5,6-Tetrachloro-2-(trifluoromethyl)-benzoyl fluoride is formed as a by-product [217] (equation 111).

Paroxetine is an antidepressant marketed by GlaxoSmithKline as Paxil. Example 2 of U.S. 4,007,196 (to A/S Eerrosan) describes preparation on the free base from of paroxetine, while U.S. 4,721,723 (to Beecham Group Pic.) describes the synthesis of the crystalline hydrochloride hemihydrate, which is the preferred form to administer the drug.
