Ayurveda was described centuries before this. Hence, it is only natural that Ayurveda does not mention the terms immunostimulants or immunomodula-tors . The original Ayurvedic texts, like Charaka and Sushruta Samhita [3, 4], are written in Sanskrit, the classical language of ancient India. Thus, translation and interpretation of terms which may mean immunostimulant or immunomodula-tor have been the major source of research material for many scientists. 

Table 1 lists some of the plants described in Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita having these properties. 

Two of the best developed and most widely used traditional medicinal systems, which are both well documented and rich in concept and practice, are the various Indian and Chinese systems of medicines. Among traditional Indian systems of medicine, the ayurvedic system has been the most popular and best known in the West. Ayurveda literally means knowledge or science of life.
