The SHG signal intensity has a quadratic dependence on the incident laser pump intensity (Shen 1989). This quadratic dependence makes it especially important to correct for any variations in laser intensity across the SHG image carefully. The pump laser beam possesses a quasi-Gaussian intensity in spatial profile in addition to small random intensity fluctuations. In order to obtain an accurate surface concentration map, these intensity variations must be recorded and the resulting SHG image appropriately scaled. [Pg.168]
