Sulphur dyes chemical structure

In the Colour Index both conventional sulphur dyes and their leuco counterparts are allocated the same Cl constitution number a different number is given to the related solubilised version. Thus, for example, Cl Sulphur Black 1 and Cl Leuco Sulphur Black 1 have the reference Cl 53185 whereas Cl Solubilised Sulphur Black 1 appears under Cl 53186. Because of the complexity of the final products, sulphur dyes are classified according to the chemical structure of the organic starting material that predominates in the manufacturing process. Typical intermediates include aromatic amines, with or without nitro and phenolic groups, and diphenylamine derivatives. 

The same technique has been employed for the purification of Food Colour Red No. 106 (Acid red). The chemical structure of the dye is shown in Fig. 3.118. The separation process was controlled by analytical RP-HPLC carried out in an ODS column (150 X 4.6 mm i.d. particle size 5 /.an). The mobile phase consisted of ACN-0.01 M TFA (27 73, v/v). The flow rate was 1 ml/min and analytes were detected at 254 nm. Equilibrated n-butanol and water were employed for CCC separation. OP was acidified with 40 mM of sulphuric acid, and 30 mM of aqueous ammonia was added to the LP. The coil was rotated at 800 rpm and LP was pumped at a flow rate of 1 ml/min. Dye Classification Based on chemical structure or chromophore, 20-30 different groups of dyes can be discerned. Azo (monoazo, disazo, triazo, polyazo), anthraquinone, phtha-locyanine and triarylmethane dyes are quantitatively the most important groups. Other groups are diarylmethane, indigoid, azine, oxazine, thiazine, xanthene, nitro, nitroso, methine, thiazole, indamine, indophenol, lactone, aminoketone and hydroxyketone dyes and dyes of undetermined structure (stilbene and sulphur dyes). The vast array of commercial colourants is classified in terms of colour, structure and application method in the Colour Index (C.I.), which has been edited since 1924 (and revised every three months) by the Society of Dyers and Colourists and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. Each dye is given a C.I. generic name determined by... 

The categories marked ( ) are not classified as to chromophore since sulphur dyes for example are mixtures of indeterminate structures and azoic and oxidation bases are Ingrain dyes (section 2.4.2.8) and are sold as components, the final dye being produced on the substrate by chemical processes.
