Because of the difficulties involved in removing oxygen (and keeping it removed) from the sample and eluent solutions, most applications of electrochemical detectors in ion chromatography have been the detection of relatively easily oxidized species (cyanide sulfide, sulfite, nitrite, or phenols, for example). 

The use of irradiation combined with chemiluminescence is not unusual the idea is to use the photofragments as chemiluminescent analytes to be oxidized directly or to form part of a luminol system. The photoproduct of sparfloxacin forms a complex with Tb the complex sensitizes the chemiluminescence intensity of the Ce(IV)/sulfite system. Electrochemical detectors have also been employed to detect the resulting photofragments (Table 4).
