Subtilisin-like serine protease

Furin, also known as paired basic amino-acid-cleaving enzyme (PACE), is a membrane bound subtilisin-like serine protease of the irons Golgi compartment. It is ubiquitously expressed and mediates processing of many protein precursors at Arg-X-Lys/Arg-Arg sites. [Pg.512]

The dendrogram is based on a sequence alignment of the catalytic domains only. The figure was modified after [141]. Fig. (6). The genomic DNA encoding Prl in the other main insect pathogenic Beauveria species, B. brongniartii contains three introns that are 64, 57-, and 61-bp long (Sheng et al., 2006). The deduced amino-acid sequence of the protein shows similarity to that of Prl from M anisopliae (67%), and Prl from B. bassiana (76%). The calculated molecular mass of the Prl precursor is 39121 Da and its pi is 8.0. The protein has three active sites characteristic of subtilisin-like serine proteases. [Pg.283]

Proteases are essential for the conversion of inactive proprotein precursors into the active neuropeptides. Two main protease pathways have been elucidated for processing proneuropeptides and hormones the recently discovered cysteine protease cathepsin L with aminopeptidase B and the well-established subtilisin-like serine proteases that consist of prohormone con-vertases 1 and 2 followed by carboxypeptidase E/H. Endogenous regulators modulate these two protease pathways as endogenous peptide inhibitors, activators, and in vivo secretory vesicle proteins. Neuropeptides in CSE (cerebrospinal fluid) in neurological diseases can monitor brain nervous activity because neuropeptides represent active neurotransmission (93, 94). [Pg.1233]
