Student Perspectives on Teaching and Learning

The concepts of surface and deep approach to learning are important to bear in mind when designing learning activities. The study showed that for a majority of students, the road to understanding theory is through applications and connections to real-world problems. When students learn theory in relation to practical applications, they are more motivated and they see their education as useful and relevant. This increase in motivation leads to an increase in confidence in their knowledge and skills. As a result, they feel more competent and better prepared for their future roles as engineers. [Pg.145]
