The principal advantage of die "flange projectile in comparison to die other subcaliber projectiles was that it had no parts to be discarded, because the hollow stud and die flange were easily depressed when die projectile passed from die rifled section of die gun to the smaller caliber smooth bore extension... 

In opening the piece after firing, the breech-block strikes the lamp on top of the extractor, and revolves it so os to carry the now empty cartrid -shell to the rear. After psssiug a certain ixiint, the >iral spring in front 6f the extractor is released, and accelerates its motion, so that the cartridge is thrown sharply a nst the beveled surface of the ejector-stud, by mch it is deflected upward and exiled from the gun,...

Shunt-gun. (Ordnance.) A rifled gun, having two. sets of grooves, — one down which the studs on the ball are passed in loading and another, not so deep, along which the studs pass in discharging, — the 11 being shunted from one set to the other at the bottom of the boi e.

An arc is struck between a metal stud (acting as the electrode) held in a stud welding gun and the metal plate to be joined, and raises the temperature of the ends of the component to melting point. The gun forces the stud against the plate and welds it. Shielding is provided by a ceramic ferrule surrounding the stud.
