Structured Packings Structured packings have been around since as early as the 1940s. First-generation structured packings, such as Panapak, never became popular, and are seldom used nowadays. [Pg.54]

One of the earliest versions of modern structured packings was Pana-pak packing (tradename Pan American Refining Corporation) described by Scofield in 1950 [ J]. This packing was formed from multiple layers of metal lath that were corrugated and assembled in such a manner as to produce a honeycomb-like structure. In a refinery vacuum column, Panapak packing produced only 12% of the pressure drop of the bubble-cap trays, which had been used for more than 25 years at that time. [Pg.31]
