Steroid hormone conjugates biosynthesis

Cholesterol sulfate occurs in bovine adrenal glands (Drayer et ai, 1964). This fact raises the possibility that the conjugate may represent an active form of cholesterol in metabolic processes other than those concerned with steroid hormone biosynthesis. Isolation of the sodium and pyridinium salts of cholesterol sulfate and recording of their infrared spectra led to the identification of these compounds. 

To give a more specific idea of the biosynthesis and transformation of stcii oid conjugates in the fetoplacental unit, we will consider simultaneously tlie biosyntliesis and transformation of the unconjugated forms of steroid hormones. 

Besides hormonal steroid conjugates (Figure 2.7), bile alcohol and bile acid conjugates can also be analyzed by shotgun steroidomics. These metabolites are often elevated in abundance in plasma as a consequence of an inborn error of bile acid biosynthesis or as a consequence...
