Not to be confused with E. Eleanor Field, Ellen Field together with her spouse, Edgar Stedman,37 formed the most equal chemistry partnership of those we have studied. Of course, in those days, equal work was not reflected in equal status. Field was born on 29 October 1883 at Greenwich, Kent, the daughter of William Frederick Field, a labourer, and Ellen Bobey.37 She studied towards a chemistry degree at Goldsmiths College.
