Dogfish, spiny

On the basis of studies on the metabolism of the fish anesthetic, methane sulfonate of m-aminobenzoic acid ethyl ester (MS-222), by a shark (the spiny dogfish, Squalus aeanthias), Maren et al. (25) reported the formation of a metabolite, m-aminobenzoic acid, by cleavage of the ester bond (Figure 1). This ester-hydrolyzed product was not partitioned across the gill, but was slowly excreted by the kidney. [Pg.125]

Aside from cod liver oil, no mention has been made of other fish liver oils, although at one time, there was production of vitamins A and D from the liver oil of a Pacific dogfish Squalus acanthius. This industry collapsed when synthetic vitamins were introduced. The Atlantic spiny dogfish is essentially the same fish, and the liver oils from both coasts have been compared (103). The distinguishing feature of... [Pg.1669]

Shark cartilage powder, prepared from cartilage from the fins of hammerhead sharks (Sphyma lewini) or spiny dogfish Squabis acanthias), is promoted as a treatment for arthritis and cancer (43), based on antiangiogenic properties, but crude extracts are ineffective (44), presumably because the active constituents, such as sphjmastatins are not absorbed. [Pg.240]

In adult fish, females often contain higher mercury concentrations than males, possibly because they consume more food than males in order to support the energy requirements of egg production. The increased feeding rate in females causes greater dietary uptake of methylmercury however, the transfer to egg mass is a small fraction of the maternal body burden. Mercury concentrations in spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), were influenced by dogfish sex, length, and area of collection. [Pg.433]
