Sherman functions take typical values of 0.1-0.3, but only a very small fraction I/Io of the electrons in the beam are backscattered into the detectors. For judging the efficiency of a spin detector, the figure of merit e = (I/Iq)S reflects both these aspects. Figures of merit for typical spin polarimeters are in the range of 10 -10. It is a relevant quantity for estabhshing the statistical error in a polariTation measurement ... 

By using four detectors in a standard Mott detector, a single gold foil can be used for spin analysis along two orthogonal directions. The polarimeter depicted schematically in Figure 3.2.2.32 combines two Mott detectors, one oriented at 90° with respect to the other, allowing for complete three-dimensional spin polarimetry, that is, with quantization axes =x, y, and z [39].
