Figure 3.2 shows a Raman spectrum of nitrile rubber demonstrating the sensitivity of the C=C stretching vibration to its environment in the polymer molecule.

A quick way of confirming the presence of CPE, EVA or nitrile rubber is to add about 20 ml of toluene to the polymer mixture and leave it to stand at ambient temperature for 2-3 h to dissolve the modifier. The toluene is separated by filtration and concentrated to low bulk, and sufficient is evaporated on to a sodium chloride plate to produce a thin film. The last traces of toluene are removed in a vacuum oven and the IR spectrum is recorded.
